LETTER XV

Sunday, December 14th 1803.

Do you remember this day twelvemonth, (I have no recollection of this day, but as my sensations were only that of calm friendship, I did not feel those very tender impressions which so strongly marked particular days to this lady; and perhaps those days she found so very pleasant were not always so to me: to sit and see Mr. G. adoring her, was sometimes rather disgusting to me.) for I have had it so strong in my memory, that I have lived in N —Street every moment of this day.
Well, I trust we shall see some of those happy hours again; in the mean time do tell me something of your little Sarah, and what Mr. G. is doing, for though I received a letter from him yesterday, he tells me nothing, only that he is as much my slave as ever.
Pray tell him I am not at all pleased with his letter, and therefore I shall henceforth expect to hear from you only; (Though I do not know how Mr. G. had displeased her, I rather believe this anger was affected.) I am desirous of hearing how he and you spend your time, and that you are all well, and as happy as you can be ; and instead of all this he writes me a few scrawling lines, about — all which is very amusing when one is upon the spot with you, and knows all the things of real
consequence about you both, and your affairs.
I know you will all be glad to hear that Mr. Siddons is coming home, when I tell you it is to (What follows is private family affairs, which I do not think I should be justifiable (as it concerns others) to mention.)
I rejoice to hear that you and Mr. Jones are good friends, because I know how much he has the power and the will to exert authority and domination.(Mrs. Siddons's observation as to Mr. Jones is by no means just, he does not exert authority and domination as she accuses him.)
Adieu! the compliments of the approaching season attend you all, not excepting your husband, to whom I have written a scolding (This scolding I never saw but I suppose it was too tender a one for my perusal.) for his no news,
Your affectionate

S. SIDDONS.
